Anyone for tennis ? Herring Gulls. Brooklyn
A young Herring Gull "plays" with an old, washed up tennis ball - thereby learning the techniques of hunting and especially, how to open hard-shelled seafood.
Be it our species or theirs, animal play has the delightful - and rewarding- purpose of enabling a young individual to cognitively interact with, manipulate and eventually master its environment - and fine-tune its own survival skills. Practice makes perfect, right ? After much trial and error, adult gulls learn to crack open clams by dropping them from the air. Preferably, on a hard-surfaced road, sidewalk or parking lot.
