A female ruddy duck fights both cold and fatigue by momentarily tucking her head under her wing coverts - for a short power nap. Ducks sleep throughout the day and night, at intervals, regardless of the time, alternating feeding, courtship, preening and quiet slumber. Post Clean Water act, the waters of NYC are considerably less toxic than they used to be. Ironically, many of the wintering duck species have plummeted in numbers, where they might have benefited from cleaner wintering grounds.
