On Mallard Lake. Central Park
A male and female Mallard 'up-end', appear to perform an upside-down version of synchronized swimming, head over heels as they glean aquatic greens from the water's edge. Mallards are 'dabbling' ducks and are primarily vegetarian. They are one of the rare waterfowl species to nest in NYC; most species visit NY exclusively during the winter months. Increasingly, Mallards are hybridizing with another year-round resident - the Black Duck - a primarily coastal species.
