In winter, wild birds in winter are easier to hand tame. They appear to lose some of their aversion to humans and willingly accept handouts. Here, in northern Manhattan, a mildly adventurous Downy Woodpecker finally accepts some seed - just a few inches from its human benefactor. Some birds (especially chickadees) will not hesitate to land on a person's hand to take a sunflower seed.
