A Salad Bar for Brant Geese. Coney Island, Brooklyn
In November, Brant Geese arrive by the tens of thousands and spend the winter in and around the NYC harbor. They travel from as far away as the tundra of Baffin and Ellesmere Islands, their arctic breeding grounds. Once eelgrass feeders (which died off in the 30's in NY waters), the birds now live off a diet of lawn grass and sea lettuce, which flourishes in the harbor thanks to high levels of nitrogen brought on by high levels of sewage run off from the City.
