Oyster History, Staten Island

Looking south from the southernmost tip of NYC, on the southern coast of Staten Island, towards the mouth of the Raritan Bay and South Amboy, New Jersey. You are standing on the remains of huge deposits of oyster shells - called oyster middens - deposited there by pre-Columbian Lenni Lenapes who once lived in the area. Mostly hunter-gatherers, the Lenape survived on an abundance of seafood unparalleled in the world today. There are no more oyster beds in New York City harbor.
