Twelve-spotted skimmer. Manhattan.
Twelve-spotted skimmer. Manhattan.
One of numerous dragonfly species known in the NYC area, many of which can be seen on the island of Manhattan, notably in Central Park, where 50 species of Odonates (that's Dragonflies and Damselflies) are found, hovering above the reservoir, the Harlem Meer, the Lake, the Pool, Turtle Pond, etc. In addition to being aesthetically rare and intellectually fascinating (their behavioral ecology and evolutionary traits are mind-boggling), Odonates fulfill a valuable role in our ecology - for us primates especially, since many actively hunt mosquitoes!
